2002 Swill-Off

The Wizard’s second ever Swill-Off was held at our June meeting. This year’s swill-off featured a double blind tasting of eight commercial “mega lagers”. Results and tasting notes are shown below. If this isn’t enough to make you want to go out and buy a six pack, revisit the Swill-Off 2000 for an added incentive!

Milwaukee’s Best ($3.99 per 6)

Very pale straw color, extremely clear, head retention is fair.
Carbonation is high. Some corn aroma no discernable hop or malt aromas
Bland, light and dry not much flavor.
The mouthfeel is thin    

Rolling Rock ($6.00 per 6)

Pale Straw color extremely clear
hop or malt aromas
Very little flavor some graininess
mouthfeel is thin

Budweiser ($5.00 per 6)

Pale Straw color extremely clear
No hop or malt aromas
Terrible aftertaste.

Busch ($4.49 per 6)

Pale Straw color extremely clear
No hop or malt aromas Slight aftertaste

Miller High life ($4.99 per 6) ** Bronze Medal **

Straw color slightly darker than the previous samples extremely clear
No hop or malt aromas not much flavor, Creamer mouthfeel and excellent head retention.

Schaefer ($3.99 per 6) ** Silver Medal **

Pale Straw color extremely clear
No hop or malt aromas, clean not much flavor
Mouthfeel and head retention OK

Schlitz ($3.99 per 6) ** Gold Medal **

Pale Straw color extremely clear
No hop or malt aromas
Some hop bitterness and very slight hop flavor
Decent mouthfeel

Yeungling amber lager ($6.00 per 6)

Pale amber color extremely clear
No hop aroma. Paper like flavor spoils what would make an otherwise drinkable beer.
